The Caledonian System
What is the Caledonian System?
The Caledonian System uses an integrated whole family approach to address domestic abuse of women by men in Scotland.
It combines a programme for male offenders with support services for women and children affected by domestic abuse. This model works with men who abuse to change their behaviour and address their attitudes to women and violence.
The Caledonian Central Team members at Community Justice Scotland have a background in working directly with men who have abused partners and women who have experienced abuse.
How is Community Justice Scotland involved?
Community Justice Scotland (CJS) is responsible for the national training and ongoing development of the Caledonian System. As part of this role, we provide training, guidance and support to local authority areas to enable practitioners to deliver the system in line with accredited standards.
CJS do not have an operational role in the delivery or management of individual cases.
Decisions relating to assessment, case management, programme participation and service delivery are made by the relevant local authority responsible for the case. As a result, CJS is unable to comment on, review, investigate or become involved in matters relating to individual cases, complaints or local service decisions.
- If you have concerns about an individual case, or the way in which the Caledonian System is being delivered in a particular area, we would encourage you to contact the relevant local authority as they are best placed to respond to enquiries and address any concerns regarding their operational practice.
We appreciate your understanding regarding the distinction between CJS’s training role and the operational responsibilities held by local authorities.
Where is the Caledonian System available?
The interactive map below shows the areas in which specific domestic abuse-related training is available in Scotland. Included on this map is the Caledonian System, Fergus Programme and UP2U.
Fergus Programme is available in Angus and is suitable for men who have been convicted of domestically abusive related offences within a heterosexual relationship. Read more here
UP2U is a domestic abuse behaviour change programme designed to help people make positive changes to their behaviour in their relationships. The programme is for males or females who are aged 16 or over and who have been convicted of a domestic abuse offence and are subject to social work supervision in North Lanarkshire, West Lothian, Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire.
