In accordance with ‘The Promise’, in the first instance any young person under the age of 16 years can be remitted to the children’s hearing for disposal and will continue to receive intensive support. 16–21-year-olds in Hamilton and Lanark Sheriff Courts can also be sentenced to a structured deferred sentence which offers tailored support to reduce and prevent their further involvement in offending behaviours. Action for Children and Includem work in partnership with the Whole System Approach team to deliver additional support which includes assistance with employability and addressing any mental health issues they may have.

Possible Outcomes

A reduction in criminalisation of young people. Improved stability and inclusion in their communities, e.g. better housing, registered with a G.P and acquiring skills for further education or employment.
