Employability; Apex Scotland

Details of all Specific national or local scheme/intervention(s) available

This provides for a range of employability supports. The physical provision of this service is only available in the Inner Moray Firth area, although some aspects of the support can be accessed online, e.g. CV preparation; interview techniques; disclosure of previous convictions; job searches etc. In other areas this can be accessed through the Fair Start Scotland, which provide participants with pre-employment support for a period of up to 12 months, and in-work support for a period of up to 12 months. It is tailored to meet the participant’s needs.

Highland Homeless Trust

Gateway is working with as many clients as 145 at any one time, providing supported accommodation to 49 vulnerable adults and supporting an average of 100 people in their own homes or living in Care Homes with a varying range of support needs. We aim to promote independent living for everyone that we support, either in their own homes or to move on from our supported accommodations to their own tenancies.
Whilst our mainstream work has been in housing support services, we have over the past few years expanded our scope to offer holistic services to vulnerable adults with an age range of 16-85.

Programme Title and Provider

Lochaber Hope, Fort William

Lochaber Hope provide 4 main services – Counselling, Mentoring, Training and Employability.
Counselling – Professional, experienced Counsellors are available to work with all ages and issues, daily including weekends and evenings. We also offer counselling for Couples, Children and Young People.
Mentoring – Lochaber Hope offers Mentor support to individuals, agencies and employers. Maybe counselling seems too in-depth, but you could use someone to support you while you’re struggling. Maybe you need help with finances, loneliness or a job application?
Training – We offer a range of training courses to individuals, agencies and employers. All courses can be tailored to suit your needs and times can vary to fit your training requirements. Training courses include: Motivation, Effective Communication, Taking Control Confidently, Employability Skills, CV Writing, Interview Techniques, Managing Change, Money Management, Parenting Skills and Anger Management.
Employability – We provide employability skills and personal development training, placement and job trial opportunities for customers and support for employers to help manage costly recruitment needs.
In addition to the 4 main services Lochaber Hope also have a Peer Social and Support sessions.

Programme Title and Provider

Abriachan Forest Trust Inverness, IV3 8LD

Outdoor programmes of 8-12 sessions for groups of adults. These include Branching Out for those who have mental ill health, Roots to Resilience for people involved in the criminal justice system. Similar, though shorter twilight, more active programmes are run for those who are at risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and other interactive sessions are organised for people affected by dementia. Activities offered depend on the interests and capacity of the participants but can include gentle guided strolls around the easy access paths, more vigorous walks up the hill to get the views, gardening, mountain biking, archery and always something creative, some conservation, learning about the environment and some shared refreshments around a campfire.
Wellbeing improvements have been developed further by the introduction of Outsider Decider Skills – a ‘toolbox’ of strategies to use when the need arises. Adults who have support from NHS community mental health teams already recognise and use Decider Skills.

Possible Outcomes

Participants in the organised programmes, feel more motivated and a sense of ownership in Abriachan’s woods then become regular volunteers, gaining life skills, achieving relevant awards.
