Programme for Government: short-term prison sentences

In response to the First Minister’s announcement in the programme for Govenment that the presumption against short sentences will be extended to twelve months, Community Justice Scotland’s Chief Executive, Karyn McCluskey, said:

“Scotland can lead the world in transformative justice.”

“A smart justice system replaces ineffective short sentences with a problem-solving focus on addiction, mental health, poverty, social exclusion and adverse childhood experiences – and recognises prevention is better than cure.

Victims and those who have offended must be at the heart of it. Debts must be repaid, support provided and resources available if we want to build stong, safe and productive communities for us all.”
