Wood workshop

Individuals learn the safe use and storage of hand and electrical tools, health and safety in a workshop environment and general joinery skills. Items made are used to improve school playground and other community areas. Suitable for males and females – if aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed.

Home improvement workshop

Individuals learn skills such as surface preparation, painting, decorating, plastering, tiling and mono-blocking and subsequently decorate community facilities. Suitable for males and females – if aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed.

Laundry workshop

Collection, sorting and laundering of clothing which are returned to charity shops. Laundering of recycled school uniforms and returned to local charities and family centres. Suitable for males and females. If aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed.

Craft and sewing workshop

Hand and safe use of sewing and embroidery machines whereby soft furnishings are donated to families in need and craft items made being sold at fayres with proceeds donated to local charities. Suitable for males and females – if aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed. This may be suitable for individuals requiring lighter duties.

Bicycle workshop

Repair and maintenance of discarded bicycles which are subsequently donated to local schools, low income families and NLC toy appeal. Suitable for males and females – if aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed.

General squad

Individuals participate in a range of environmental projects such as ground clearance, landscaping, renovation and construction of play areas, garden refurbishment and canal restoration. Suitable for males and females – if aged under 18 years, a supervision requirement must be imposed. Suitability may depend on the individual’s health and mobility factors.

Allotment and market garden

Individuals learn skills in soil preparation, husbandry, planting and bringing on from seed a variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Goods harvested are donated to children’s units and sheltered housing complexes.

Possible Outcomes

Reparation to the community. Work skill and soft skill enhancement, pro-social identity. Opportunity to engage in generative activities.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Criminal Justice Social Work report stage and post sentence interview, whereby the individual’s circumstances, risks, skills and interests are taken into account.

Unpaid Work – Youth Justice

Young people will be supported by the Restorative Justice Team and a programme of work will be developed on an individual basis. The young people could be placed in a work squad in the community, in an individual placement or in one of the three workshops which provide skills in home improvements, woodwork and a bike repair.

Possible Outcomes

The young person may have a feeling of achievement having completed their placement and may feel a gain a sense of structured in their routine. They may also gain skills from their placement, workshop or educational element which they can gains hours for attending.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Through the Criminal Justice Social Work Report. Assessment of the placement would be completed by the Restorative Justice team once an Order had been made by the Court.

Individual placements

Predominantly provided by external agencies, individuals are involved in groundwork and gardening, assisting in charity shops and community cafes.

Possible Outcomes

Reparation to the community. Work skill and soft skill enhancement, pro-social identity. Individuals may continue with individual placement as a volunteer when unpaid work ends or other generative activities.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Criminal Justice Social Work report stage and post sentence interview, whereby the individual’s circumstances, risks, skills and interests are taken into account. Risk assessment of the placement agency to discuss health and safety requirements, responsibilities, eligibility criteria and exclusions.

Individuals can access the interventions provided by third sector partners detailed below. In addition, justice social work provide interventions to address specific behaviours (alcohol/drug use, employment, leisure), relationships (family work, Solihull parenting programme), pro-criminal attitudes and behaviours (anger, impulsivity) and responsivity issues. A number of ‘other activity’ activities provided by partner agencies such as Harm Reduction, British Red Cross, Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), Routes To Work are certificated.

Possible Outcomes

Skill enhancement, improved ability to manage high risk-situations, ability to identify triggers and develop coping strategies, improved family relationships/parenting capacity.

At Criminal Justice Social Work report stage, if considering unpaid work only, the nature of other activity is considered. Other activity determined by case management plan and outcome star.

CPO Connect – Wise Group

Delivered on a group basis maximum of 15 participants the programme is designed to provide information and awareness raising to service users over a variety of topics: mental health/thoughts and emotion/diet and health/benefits and budgeting/building positive networks/dealing with conflict/employment and training/alcohol and drug education. Suitable for all males and females subject to Community Payback Order awareness raising that can be developed more specifically by an allocated worker.

Possible Outcomes

To provide a level of education/knowledge and insight for each participant that can be utilised in assisting person to identify supports.

The topics covered are general offending/ healthy relationships/benefits/health/equality/drug and alcohol awareness/law and police/gambling awareness/COVID/positive use of time. Suitable for all males and females subject to a Community Payback Order.

Improved engagement with services and increased participation in pro-social activities

Development of script then on-line performance – Street Cones

Details of all Specific national or local scheme/intervention(s) available

Delivered on a group basis designed to support individuals through the creative arts addressing various topics impacting on service users’ lives. Participants attended on-line platform and devised a script that was then developed into a play that was performed by some of those involved in script writing. Suitable for all males and females across various age ranges. The use of creative arts has been utilised by other Local Authorities for young people and adults.

Possible Outcomes

Improved engagement with services, increased self-esteem, group support, pro-social modelling, improved health and wellbeing.
