Serving the Community

Over 12.5 million hours of unpaid work have been completed nationwide since 2011.

Serving the Community is an ongoing digital campaign highlighting unpaid work projects in local communities across Scotland.

From transforming a primary school, to rebuilding a rural footbridge, to taking care of rescue chickens – each example shows how communities benefit from the work of community payback teams. By sharing these stories, the campaign showcases the value of unpaid work to communities and organisations alike, generating positive engagement and media coverage.

How you can get involved

For organisations

If your organisation has worked with unpaid work teams, we’d love to feature your project in the campaign.

Projects may include:

  • Clearing and maintaining public paths and green spaces
  • Building benches and other community assets
  • Supporting environmental or heritage sites
  • Maintaining community gardens and allotments

By sharing your experience, you can help demonstrate the value of unpaid work while amplifying the campaign through co-branded digital content

For local authorities

We’re inviting local authorities to put forward unpaid work projects that have made a positive difference in their area.

Projects may include:

  • Improving local facilities or shared spaces
  • Supporting schools, charities or community groups
  • Responding to locally identified needs
  • Delivering long-term benefits for people and places

By taking part, you can help highlight the impact of unpaid work locally and inspire others to get involved. We’ll provide campaign assets and support to help share your story.
