Programme Title and Provider

Drug treatment requirement

Details of all Specific national or local scheme/intervention(s) available

A drug treatment requirement might be imposed when there are drug issues identified, but where an individual has not established a chronic history of drug misuse. Such a requirement will only be imposed in addition to an offender supervision requirement. At present the individual made subject to such a requirement is referred for assessment at Drumhar Medical centre. There will be regular liaison between the supervising officer and the addictions worker.

Possible Outcomes

Where a drug treatment requirement is imposed, a case management plan will be compiled by the responsible officer setting out what treatment and interventions are planned to address an individual’s drug misuse. This process can commence at the Community Justice Social Work Report stage and will be added to once the Community Payback Order commences. Depending on the stage of the process at which such an assessment is to be carried out, it may involve the Criminal Justice Social Work Report author, the responsible officer, addictions workers or others. As in all services providing treatment and care, the individual concerned should be consulted on all aspects of their needs and on the proposed approach to helping them achieve recovery. The aim of all treatment should be recovery from drug use.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

The author of the Criminal Justice Social Work Report will assess whether the individual appears to have a drug problem related to their offending behaviour and if treatment is already in place. If treatment is already in place it may not be necessary for this requirement however there will be issues of compliance and motivation to change which will be taken into consideration by the report author who will in all likelihood liaise with specialist addictions workers to determine the most effective course of action and recommendation to the court.
