Relationships Scotland Orkney (RS Orkney)

RS Orkney provides a range of therapeutic and support services for individuals, couples, children, young people and families; and aims to promote positive and respectful relationships in our community. The support offered includes Individual and Relationship counselling; Family Mediation for separated parents or between other family members; a Child Contact Centre where parents can see children they no longer live with (supported/supervised); youth counselling and play therapy for younger children; and specialist substance misuse support and counselling. Our Support Workers provide one-to-one support for individual adults/young people, and parenting support for families. Services are confidential, free and tailored to the needs of the individual/family. . The specialist substance misuse services involve harm reduction support and/or counselling with a view to prevention (where someone is at risk of substance misuse), recovery (where someone is ready to make changes), or therapy (to explore underlying issues contributing to substance misuse).

Possible Outcomes

The service provides a safe and confidential space where those experiencing difficulties can explore ways to move forward, strengthen relationships and potentially improve well-being.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Individuals can self-refer by phone or email; or other agencies can refer, with the individual’s consent. Those assessed as suitable for this type of work can be identified at the CJSWR stage, but referral can be placed at a later stage if required /deemed appropriate or responsive to the individual’s needs. There is no specific referral form: a phone call (01856 877750) or email to enquiries@rsorkney.org.uk will be followed up within 1 working day; and an initial meeting to discuss the individual’s needs, and which services are most appropriate for them, is usually offered within a week.

RS Orkney is an independent local charity affiliated to the national body Relationships Scotland, funded through a variety of sources including Scottish Government, Orkney Islands Council and various charitable grant-giving bodies The substance misuse counselling service is commissioned by the Orkney Alcohol & Drugs Partnership.

Mental Health Difficulties

Orkney Blide Trust

Orkney Blide Trust provides support to people aged 16 or over who have experienced or are experiencing problems associated to poor mental health. The service offers a safe environment where trained staff offer practical and emotional support to the attendees.

Possible Outcomes

The service recognises that issues such as: relationship break down, drugs or alcohol misuse, employment difficulties, bereavement, stress and social isolation can contribute too and exacerbate mental ill health. Therefore, for the purpose of aiding people’s mental health recovery the service provides one to one support, counselling and a daily drop-in service as well as opportunities to take part in therapeutic, active and purposeful activities as part of a supportive community.

Referrals can be placed from professional services or individuals can self- refer.

Homelessness/Accommodation Issues

The Y – People Orkney Young Persons’ Supported Accommodation Service (YPSAS), which has been replaced by Right There

Right There, Young Person’s Supported Accommodation Service (YPSAS) provides supported accommodation for homeless young people in Orkney (16-25). The service aims to provide a safe and secure environment to assist young people acquire a range of independent living skills in their transition from homelessness into permanent tenancies.

Right There also provide counselling for 16–25-year-olds, Youth Counsellors hold a Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Certificate in counselling children and young people, Counsellors are registered with the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
Youth Counsellors use a range of methods and identify what is most suitable for the young person, this includes psychodynamic and therapeutic counselling, play and art therapy to support the young person to explore feelings, emotions, and experiences and supports the development of healthier coping mechanisms.

Possible Outcomes

The support workers at YPSAS work closely with the young people in their accommodation and tailor the service to meet the individuals’ needs and work in partnership with young people through person centred support planning and reviews. The service supports young people with areas such as: daily living skills, employment, training or education, budgeting, relationship breakdown, drugs or alcohol misuse and mental health. Therefore, the young people can be assisted to acquire practical skills to maintain a permanent tenancy.

Right There – The counselling support offered to young people helps reduce the increased risk of using or experimenting with drugs and alcohol due to life experiences, trauma, current circumstances including history of parent/carer drug or alcohol misuse.

All referrals come through the Orkney Islands Council Housing Service and Homeless Department. Commissioned by Orkney Islands Council.
