People who frequently appear in court whose offending is related to drug addiction/drug use.

Possible Outcomes

Improved health, abstinence/ reduction in substance use, safe management/stability in substance use, desistance.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Where a person’s offending is directly related to their substance use, this option may be included as an option/recommendation in the social work court report. An individual would receive a comprehensive assessment from social work and medical staff to determine suitability for the Drug Treatment and Testing Order programme.

Every person subject to a Drug Treatment and Testing Order – this service is offered as an addition to those subject to a Drug Treatment and Testing Order.

Programme title and provider

Blood Borne Virus (BBV)
Service provided by NHS Lothian and co-ordinated in conjunction with social work (DTTO) Drug Treatment and Testing Order.

Details of all Specific national or local scheme/intervention(s) available

We provide a Blood Borne Virus (BBV) service for every client on the Order should they wish to engage with this (testing for hepatitis and HIV and also vaccinations for hepatitis A and B and information provided on reducing transmission and lowering risk).
We also have a hepatitis C nurse who can see clients with a positive diagnosis and link them into services within the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh/Western General Hospital.
At the men’s service we signpost clients to Chalmers Street Health Centre for STI testing. We also have a supply of condoms that we can offer.
Other health interventions: we also offer naloxone packs and training for overdose, brief interventions regarding alcohol, check clients Body Mass Index and offer support around weight and diet, offer harm reduction advice, run benzodiazepine and relapse prevention groups and monitor client’s mental health; doing work on anxiety management and offering CBT, and liaising with GPs re their treatment and other medications the clients are prescribed.

Referral.
People subject to a Drug Treatment and Testing Order are offered the service routinely and social work staff will refer to relevant services where appropriate and with the individual’s agreement.
