Structured Deferred sentence (SDS) is targeted at individuals who have a low to medium risk/needs rating (Level of Service Case Management Inventory: LSCMi) with regards to reoffending. This disposal targets individuals who have an identifiable need which could be explored and addressed through a six month intervention. All types of low level offending behaviour will be considered.

Possible Outcomes

A reduction in the risk of reoffending behaviour. When a Structured Deferred Sentence is imposed staff measure 5 areas of change which is revisited when the disposal nears its end. This is a subjective tool which measures areas of offending behaviour, substance misuse, connections, health and lifestyle.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

At the Criminal Justice Social Work Report report writing stage a screening is undertaken to establish whether or not the individual meets the criteria. If the criteria is met then an action plan is established at this time and outlined within this section of the report. If the intervention is imposed a report will be submitted to Court after three months and a completion report after six months. Interventions are identified and delivered by staff on a bespoke basis as identified need at the screening stage can change considerably following the formation of a positive relationship with named worker.

Throughcare and after care support for young men being released from HMPYPOI Polmont who have served a custodial sentence. Support in relation to Housing, employment etc.

Preventing further offending

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Whole Systems Approach (WSA) meeting takes place with young person within 48 hours of being admitted to HMPYOI Polmont. WSA Co-ordinator and HMPYOI have discussions in relation to referrals.
Only available to males under 21 years but excludes males convicted of a sexual offence or on remand.

Action for children – turning the corner

Early Intervention Project – 12 weekly sessions of intervention
Youth Diversion – 12 weekly sessions of intervention

Possible Outcomes

Preventing young people coming into the Children Hearing System and Justice System.

Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention

Police send a report to the Whole Systems Approach (WSA) Co-ordinator who will then assess if suitable for a referral.
Youth Diversion assessed by WSA Co-ordinator.
