Aim/Purpose:

The service provides support and reassurance during police interview processes to vulnerable adults aged 16 years and older, who may be affected by mental disorders and/or have communication difficulties. Support provided by the service aims to facilitate communication between individuals and police, ensuring that the person understands and continues to understand why they are being interviewed, the questions they are being asked and what their rights are throughout the process.

Suitability criteria:

  • All genders
  • Middle-aged adult (36-55), Older adult (56 and older), Young adult (18-35)

Exclusions:

The service is unable to support anyone younger than 16 years old.

Assessment/referral process:

The Appropriate Adult Service supports referrals from Police Scotland, Civil Aviation Authority, British Transport Police, The Civil Nuclear Constabulary, HM Revenue and Customs, The Immigration Service, Police Investigations Review Commissioner, MOD Police. Referrals from the above organisations can be made direct to the service via telephone call and can be made in advance of support being required or at the time of support being required.

The Appropriate Adult Service offers support to all vulnerable adults in the criminal justice sector including individuals not yet officially accused, those officially accused, victims and witnesses. Appropriate Adults support people aged 16 years and over with communication needs due to mental health challenges, learning disability, personality disability and/or factors including brain injury, dementia, cognitive impairment and neurodiversity.
