Alcoholics Anonymous

Last updated: 6th October 2025

Support Type:

Voluntary

Need supported:

  • Alcohol

Aim/Purpose:

Our primary purpose is for our members to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety. Alcoholics Anonymous is self-supporting and does not have any ties with any other organisation. Members are encouraged to follow AA’s 12-step recovery programme. There is no waiting time to access AA. It’s Free – the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

Suitability criteria:

  • All genders
  • Adolescent (17 and under), Middle-aged adult (36-55), Older adult (56 and older), Young adult (18-35), All ages

Exclusions:

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. Anyone under 18 should ideally have written consent from a parent/guardian. We respect that those under 18 do have the right to make their own informed decisions. Group members will agree safeguarding policy for people under 18. People under 18 are welcome to attend Open AA meetings with Parents/Gaurdians taking parental responsibility.

Assessment/referral process:

  • Self-referral

Alcoholics Anonymous does not have an official referral process. Anyone with a desire to stop drinking can attend an AA meeting. Professionals can signpost those they are working with to AA and find meetings using the AA meeting finder https://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk/find-a-meeting/ and encourage people to call our 24 hour helpline. The way we work is very simple – it is one alcoholic talking to another – if you want to contact us – either because you want help with your drinking problem or because you are professionally interested in the work we do – please feel free to get in touch.
