Community Payback Order: Unpaid Work

Unpaid Work (UPW) is available across the whole of Aberdeenshire for all ages and genders. The UPW Service has Task Supervisors at bases in Banff, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Peterhead and Stonehaven, with vans available to collect and drop off those individuals who cannot reach the workshop, project or community space by other means. At the current time, work is being carried out on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis and vans are only being used to transport a maximum of one service user and one supervisor at a time.
Unpaid Work projects are available throughout Aberdeenshire, the work provided is wide and varied and is adapted to individual ability and skill level, and Covid considerations. Ordinarily, both outdoor and indoor projects are available, with workshops utilised when the weather makes outdoor work unsuitable. At present, outdoor projects are preferable.
A higher level of support is also available through a smaller programme team for those individuals who are identified as being likely to benefit from an increased level of support in order to engage with the service.
A range of physical, educational, employability and recreational activities have also been identified which can be classed as Any Other Activity and count towards the overall number of unpaid work hours imposed. In recent months, this has included the Street Cones online workshops, described below.

In terms of Community Justice Outcomes, Unpaid Work could contribute towards:
- Communities improve their understanding and participation in community justice.
- Effective Interventions are delivered to prevent and reduce the risk of further offending.
- People develop positive relationships and more opportunities to participate and contribute through education, employment and leisure activities.
- Individuals’ resilience and capacity for change and self-management are enhanced.
Process for Assessment and/or inclusion in scheme/intervention
Unpaid Work (UPW) is available across the whole of Aberdeenshire for all ages and genders. If considering imposing a Community Payback Order with an Unpaid Work Requirement, the Sheriff may wish to refer to the assessment of potential suitability for Unpaid Work, which will be included within the Sentencing Options Section of the Criminal Justice Social Work Court Report. Such a requirement would only ever be suggested where the individual is in agreement.
